It is very unfortunate to hear that Geekbench banned Samsung; the popular android smartphone manufacturing brand. Before we understand Geekbench, we should know what benchmark is.
What is Benchmark?
Benchmark is a score provided by a program by undergoing some tests on a particular device to check its performance. The people use benchmark scores for comparing devices in their performance.
GeekBench is a program that tests a device and provides the results to compare its performance. Many people use it to check their device’s capability. The Geekbench is software to measure the performance of the Central Processing Unit(CPU) / Processor of a particular device This software is available for Windows, Linux, macOS, and Android devices. It is free software. You can also use it to check your device’s performance.
Why Geekbench banned Samsung’s S series
Samsung is the most dominant Android smartphone manufacturer in the world. It is so-called because of its reliability, performance, and durability. Nobody could believe that this company would be getting a ban from other little companies. It is miserable to know that the tech giant Samsung has done something that does not suit Samsung’s reputation and character developed in the market.
Samsung was Limiting the performance of their devices. To limit the performance of the Game Optimizing Service(GOS) application. The devices include most of Samsung’s S series devices. The recently launched S22 series devices were also the victim of the Game Optimization Service(GOS) app. Click here to know more about the Game Optimization Service(GOS) app and how Samsung was caught limiting the performance of their devices using it. In addition to all of that, Samsung made another clever move that the benchmarking score on all the benchmarking apps, including Samsung, was not affected by the GOS app. This can be the main reason for Samsung’s ban from Geekbench. The statement provided to the AndroidPolice by Geekbench was as follows.
Earlier this week, we were made aware of Samsung’s Game Optimizing Service (GOS) and how it throttles the performance of games and applications. GOS decides to throttle (or not to throttle) applications using application identifiers and not application behavior. We view this as a form of benchmark manipulation as major benchmark applications, including Geekbench, are not throttled by this service.
Oneplus was also doing similar stuff like Samsung. Geekbench also banned Oneplus because of doing so. Geekbench removed the Oneplus 9 and Oneplus 9 pro and delisted them. Oneplus was also limiting the performance of their devices like Samsung. Oneplus said that they were also doing so to improve the battery timing of smartphones and prevent the heating of the devices, which was okay if Oneplus had not done it without making the people aware of it.
Is Samsung’s Note or any other series also banned?
As Samsung’s other devices, including the Note series and A series, were not limiting the performance, Geekbench is not targeting these devices. The answer is No; according to geek bench, other devices can enjoy full compatibility with Geekbench because only S series devices are banned.
Is the ban permanent?
Samsung was limiting its performance and was doing so. They promised that a future update would be released to allow the users to control the gaming performance directly. Samsung had not provided a deadline for the update. Geekbench’s current policy says that these devices have been banned permanently and will never be listed again so things are still not in favor of Samsung.
Geekbench banned Samsung. This ban does not seem to be a big deal as there are many alternatives for Geekbench, but these alternatives can be less optimized than Geekbench. This ban can also be wrong for Samsung because the ban will cause some stains on the reputation and dominance that Samsung owns in the global market. It will be interesting to see how Samsung recovers from such unpleasant incidents.
